This fantastic unrestored example has an unpolished case, it comes with the original bezel, bracelet, box and paperwork. Whilst many Rolex and Pateks have their original papers and boxes, for a vintage UG Compax or Tri-Compax to have the ‘Full Set' is incredibly rare. The Universal Genève Tri-Compax comes in various different dial variations; this reference 881101/02 being a rare variant as it features a distinctive black dial with white sub-registers. It is termed the “Evil Clapton”, because the watch was made famous by legendary guitarist Eric Clapton, who was often photographed wearing a similar reference – the 881101 which has the same layout but in reverse with silver dial and black subs. This is a very complicated watch; it has a thirty-minute register at three o'clock, a twelve-hour register at six o'clock, the sub-seconds register at nine o'clock and an aperture for the moon-phase at 12 o'clock with a concentric date ring. On both sides, two apertures reveal the day and the month (in French), respectively. The case of this ref. 881101/02 Tri-Compax remains unpolished; the original plexi-glass correctly displays the floating ‘U' symbol. “TEN” The new Universal Genève book In addition to all this the new Universal Genève “TEN” book has just been published and it includes extensive references to the rare Tri-Compax models and it sheds new light on how many were made and the different models that exist
